Free Utility of the Month

Each month we will highlight a software utility that is free and what we believe to be useful. We will provide a link to a source for you to download this utility. We will not store that program for download on the BSSi2 web site. Also note that BSSi2 does not formally support these programs nor do we take any responsibility for them if they cause any problems in your system. You install these programs at your own risk. The downloads are from reliable sources, such as PCWorld or Download.com. Most often they will be for individual computers and not for network servers. If you plan to install any of these programs on your computer at the office, we recommend you talk to your computer department or primary support person to be sure you are not violating any corporate policy or installing software that may be problematic to any of your company applications.

CleanUp!

Your computer can file up with garbage files such as tmp, backups, zero size files as well as a build up in the TEMP and TEMPORARY INTERNET folders. You may not know where all these files are. CleanUp searches your drives for potentially unwanted files so you can deal with them all with just one click. You can identify unwanted files by extension type (*.tmp for example), exclude files of a certain name, protect folders from being searched, search for zero-length files and so on. You can even have CleanUp clean your Temp directories and purge your IE URL cache. You get to review every file before any actions are taken. And if you are a little wary of deletions, you can direct CleanUp to move the files to a destination folder (like the Recycle Bin). One caution: It will delete files in the C:\temp folder. If you put files here you want to keep, rename the folder.

Web Site of the Month

Have you ever wondered where people find all those great things on the web? There are billions of web sites and not enough time in a day to surf them all. Although BSSi2 does not spend all day surfing the net, we come across interesting sites and will share some of these with you each month. We believe these sites to be safe from adware and viruses but make no such guarantees. You visit these web sites at your own risk.

Web Site of the Month: SiteAdvisor   www.siteadvisor.com

Do you like to surf the web? Even if you do not roam the internet, you still visit many sites that youve never seen before, if only to "check out" that piece of information. But how do you know if that web site is safe to visit? Many people think if all they do is look at a site, they are safe. "I have my firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware programs. I must be safe." After all, what could possibly happen by just visiting a site?

You'd be surprised what could happen from just visiting a web site, even with all that protection. Malicious cookies or programs (spyware, malware) may end up on your computer. How can you tell if a web site is untrustworthy? A new free service is available that rates web sites and can give you an idea if that site is friendly. SiteAdvisor, www.siteadvisor.com, rates sites and gives you an indication if it is friendly or not. If you do a Google search and it comes back with numerous web sites, there will be an indicator on each site found whether it is friendly or not (if it has been reviewed). McAfee was so impressed with the site the decided to buy it.

I have been using this service for years and have found it unobtrusive and informative. It requires a small plug-in to be installed to your browser and hooks into your Google and Yahoo searches. While McAfee has stated it will keep the site free, you just never know if that will change. I recommend you use SiteAdvisor while it is still free. Id be interested in your feedback on this site.
